Surfing Teahupoo, Tahiti

Teahupoo on a good day, pic by Onefire
Teahupoo is the site if one of the biggest wave breaks in the world. Here an unusually heavy wave gets sucked up from and breaks directly onto a shallow reef.

Surfers come from all over the world to ride this wave especially at the time of the Billabong Pro that takes place here once a year.  At least 5 surfers have died trying to surf Teahupoo during this time, needless to say this is a monster wave when it's cooking.

We hopped into a rent-a-car and drove the scenic route down to check out this wave reserved for the very experienced surfer.

There were some surfers out there with rescue boats and wet bikes on standby enjoying what Teahupoo provided.

On our way back we stopped at this little restaurant on the waters edge and discovered it to be the spot where some of the well known surfers (like Kelly Slater) hang out when they are in town.  It was full of surf memorabilia.  Coool!

Island of Moorea across the bay from our anchorage, next destination.
Tahiti was a great stop, but now Tahiti's little sister island of Moorea was calling us from across the bay...
