Land Ho!

Chris and Layla looking for land at sunrise
At 4am under the lights of a full moon I first saw Fatu Hiva.

T R I B E approached at sunrise, this being our initial landfall of the Marquesas.

The Pacific crossing took us 18 happy days.  We had great weather and smooth sailing, although we did quite a few sail changes en route, altering with the wind.

The morning we left Galapagos a yacht named Reve de Lune (crew Eva and Jean Luc) left a couple of hours before us.  After that we never saw them for the entire 3000 mile crossing only to arrive at Fatu Hiva and drop anchor in Hanavave Bay at exactly the same time!

The approach to Hanavave Bay is spectacular.  A group of pinnacle rocks stand 125meters high.

A fine time to arrive.  Approaching the anchorage as the sun first rays beam over the mountain tops

A lot of green after 18 days of blue, blue, blue

We joked with the kids and told them some of these islands still have cannibals.  That night as we dozed off we heard the natives beating their drums late into the night and wondered if it really was safe to go ashore the next day!
