Groot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa, founded in 1685 and a national monument in the suburb of Constantia in Cape Town.  "Groot" in Dutch and Afrikaans translates as  "great" in English.

The governor in those years, Simon van de Stel, built the house (above), Cape Dutch Style and used the lands to produce wines.  Today the house is part of the South African Cultural History Museum and Groot Constantia has joined other Estates to become part of the scenic Constantia wine route.  The wine routes in the Western Cape are one of it's highlights, and wine tasting a delightful thing to do with friends.
