Anchored at the SW Point of Utila's Cays |
We left Honduras yesterday morning at 4am heading to the Bay Island of Utila. The trip was rather unpleasant. Wind on the nose, swell and seasickness made us wonder if we were going to make it all the way to Utila. Also Safari (we are sailing together) had a pipe burst on one of their engines, so they were limping along. We considered stopping in one of the Bays on mainland Honduras, but recently reading of murders and robberies of yachts had us rule that one out. This coastline of Honduras is notorious for pirates and this kept us vigilant.
Arriving at an anchorage after dark is something one tries to avoid at all costs for obvious reasons, but today was going to be one of those days. Safari couldn't motor much faster than 5 knots and we stuck together, settling on our original destination, Utila. So, a trip that should have taken us 10 hours, ended up taking 15 hrs.
We anchored shortly after sunset near a Cay on the outskirts of the South West Shore, avoiding any attempts of cruising through coral heads at night. It was a relief after a crappy day.

Our wheels for the day. We found this airplane wreck on the runway, which also serves as the road to get to the North Shore. The driver does a quick look to make sure its clear then races along at breakneck speed before any planes come to land, no rules! |
Glad you are all safe and having a great time!
