Cape Fear NC to Charleston SC

Rourke and Layla kayaking Cape Fear

We spent 2 nights in Cape Fear about 5 miles inland "up the creek" in a quiet spot, but then again Cape Fear is a pretty quiet place.  We've kept ourselves busy with school and kayaking.  The winds are blowing in the right direction today (Wednesday 25th), which for us means coming out of the North.

Late last night, while we were tucked up and minding our own business, we had a passerby, a tugboat towing a barge, towing another barge, towing huge pipes, the whole procession was at least 300 meters long and had to pass us in this narrow creek, luckily the tide was high.

The procession...

We left Cape Fear at 8am to get a full day and a nights run in so as to arrive in Charleston in the early hours of the following morning.  Not much wind, but calm seas were the order of the day.  Chris excitedly got the rod out and proclaimed there would be fish for lunch so I started making sweet potato chips and salad to accompany it...  6hrs later, not a bite, anyway the accompaniments were devoured regardless.

We all sat at the bow as the dolphins zig zagged across it breaking the through the surface every now and then to smile at us.  The sunset painted golds splashes on the ocean as it sunk below the horizon.

Day turned into night and the sickle moon rose with the evening star.  Music (Amy Winehouse, Angus and Julia Stone, Death Cab for  Cutie and a bit of Jonny Cash thrown in the mix), check. Calm seas, check.  Moonshine, check.  Shooting stars by the dozen, check.

I'm on watch as dawn breaks, hello Charleston!
